Learning Beyond the Classroom at FH Wels

On the 16th of April, the 2N class took the train to Wels for two workshops at the FH (Fachhochschule).

We were greeted by two university students who gave us a warm welcome, showed us around the science lab and let us in on what we had to do that day. They had us set up in groups of three so we would have enough space. Our job was to turn ordinary milk into the lactose-free variety using the enzyme lactase. Everything we needed for the experiment like test tubes, lactase, milk etc. was provided. First, we tested the normal milk for glucose with little strips. The normal milk had zero mg/dl.

After we split the lactase into glucose and galactose, the milk now had 500 – 1000 mg/dl glucose, which was very fascinating. At the end of the workshop the two students answered some question that we asked.

After a lunch break in the cafeteria, we headed to the second workshop, where we talked about global warming, the sun and Earth. There were different workstations that the guide provided for us, all about global warming and nature.

After everyone was finished with the experiments, we sat down in a circle and discussed what we found out. Our guide explained, how the average temperature changed over the years and why.

Finally, after everything was done, we went back to the train to head back to our own homes.
